Cleaning and Maintaining Your GlobalVision HD Ultra 36 Scanner

Summary: Regular maintenance of your 36" GlobalVision roll scanner

There are three routine maintenance procedures that improve image quality and reduce service costs: cleaning, image capture sensor alignment, and calibration.

These three maintenance functions are closely entwined and should be performed in a single maintenance session, starting with cleaning the scan area and ending with calibration. The reason for this is simple. If you clean the glass or adjust the image capture sensors then you will have changed conditions in the scanning area and will need to calibrate in order to re-adjust black and white. This works the other way too: Scanner calibration must always be preceded by cleaning and image-capture sensor alignment to get reliable calibration results.

Cleaning your HD Ultra 36 scanner

Before cleaning the scan area, be sure to turn the scanner power off.

The feeding bed is the flat surface in front of the insertion slot. Wipe with a dry cloth so dirt and dust are not dragged into the scan area with the original.

Push down on the two lock buttons found near the insertion slot on each side of the lid.

Place your thumbs in the insertion slot and flip the scanning area lid back to its open position.

The glass plate is now exposed for cleaning. Clean the glass with a lint-free cloth and a mild, streak-free, glass cleaner. Dry the glass completely using a separate clean, dry lint-free cloth like the one provided with the maintenance kit.

Do not use abrasives or fluids that contain acetone or benzene. Do not spray liquids directly on the scanner glass plate or anywhere else in the scanner.

Clean the white-background platen with a lint-free cloth and a mild, streak-free, glass cleaner. Dry the white-background platen and rollers completely using a separate clean, dry lint-free cloth like the one provided with the maintenance kit.

Maintaining your HD Ultra 36 scanner

The WIDEsystem software provides the information and calibration tools necessary to maintain the quality and life of the scanner. It contains the "Status" of the scanner, general "Information", an hour "Log", and a "Timer".

To view the scanner and maintenance status:

Double-click on the WIDEsystem icon in the system tray to open the WIDEsystem program. Click the "Status" tab.

To view information about the wide-format scanner, such as firmware version and serial number: Click the "Info" tab.

To view information about scanner activity, such as number of scans performed and total time the scanner has been turned on: Click the "Log" tab. It is recommended to change the lamp after 4,000 hours of use.

The life span of the lamp can be significantly improved by setting a timer. This will ensure higher scanning quality by controlling the length of time the lamp is in use.

To set the wide-format scanner timer: Click the "Timer" tab. Place a check mark next to the days designated to turn the scanner "On" or "Off".

Enter times to turn the scanner "On" and "Off" using the keyboard or the provided arrow keys. The scanner takes at least one hour to warm up once it is turned on. To facilitate this process for a regular workweek, the "Link Monday to Friday" checkbox sets the "On" and "Off" times for the entire week to match those set for Monday.

Click "OK" to save the changes and close the WIDEsystem window.

Cleaning and maintenance frequencies for your HD Ultra 36 scanner

This table outlines the recommended frequencies for the replacement and maintenance of key components:

Maintenance

Frequency

Clean Glass Plate

3 days

Clean White Plate

3 days

Clean Pressure Plate

*Replacement of key components is dependent on usage and should be verified by an authorized technician prior to replacement. The authorized technician may recommend replacement prior to the number of days specified if required. In addition, the authorized technician may recommend additional maintenance on the scanner as required.

** Performed under Global Vision service contract by an authorized technician. *** It is imperative that the scanner be connected to a dedicated power supply. If not, performance can be dramatically affected.
